Who Is Responsible For Laundering Employer Provided Fire Retardant Clothing?
The responsibility always falls back on the employer as they must oversee and ensure that employees are protected while on the job.
The same rules apply to whether the arc rated garments are laundered at home, by the employer or through a rental/cleaning service. What this means is that the garments must not only be laundered properly to ensure any flammable substances are removed such as oil and grease but also required repairs due to deterioration of the fabric is performed.
If an employer does come to an agreement with their employees to allow them to home launder their ppe for whatever reason there must be a procedure in place for the host employer to inspect the fire retardant clothing to ensure the items are still providing the protection required. The problem is that when a person does not take the task seriously enough these safety issues tend to be overlooked.
Again to confirm my point the employer is still responsible for the safety of their employees wherever the laundering process is performed.
