Use Of Fracking Fluid Laws Too Lax
The Environmental Integrity Project, in a recently released report, alleges that the Safe Drinking Water Act, the federal law that regulates the use of fracking fluids into the ground is too lax.
This is because there are loopholes when it comes to non-diesel chemicals used in fracking. Because there is a lack of regulation for such chemicals, there could be more benzene injected into the ground than is safe.
Benzene when consumed through the drinking water may cause health problems in the long run. Data on chemicals injected into wells is available on the industry website Frac Focus. There are companies that use fracking fluid made up of a combination of liquids such as butane, ethyl benzene, and other liquids.
The report does not include studies on water safety. Some companies directly involved in the oil and gas industry dismiss the claims.
