Treated Sewage Water For Fracking
One of the criticisms against hydraulic fracking is the amount of water the process requires. Now the officials of Amite and Wilkinson counties are preparing a plan to boost hydraulic fracturing in the region at the same time generate income for road and bridge maintenance.
The plan involves a $10 million piping plan that will make use of treated sewage water for fracking. This is seen as an answer to two issues: the disposal of treated effluent and providing a key resource to boost the oil and gas boom.
Without a stable and inexpensive source of water, the development of the industry may not take off as desired. The allocation and safety standards in the region is controlled by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.
According to a report on the Mississippi Business Journal, the citizens own all water resources in the region but give the responsibility of their use to MDEQ. It will be up to the agency if the counties of Amide and Wilkinson can create their own water district.
