(Part 3) Oil Boom Leads to Housing Shortage
One of the areas of concern for people at the Bakken Region is the shortage of housing brought about by the sudden growth in the area’s population. The oil boom has attracted thousands of workers from out of state and the housing has failed to keep with the pace of the population growth.
Many of the workers have brought their entire families with them as they explore opportunities in the oil industry. While the industry offers high salaries, many of the families have had to live in camper vans and temporary housing in the last few years, due to the sheer lack of houses. While people living in their cars could be a sign of bankruptcy or joblessness in other states, in North Dakota, it has become a completely normal way of life. It has become all too common to see entire families including pets living in trailer homes even as the family breadwinner earns over $100,000. Many families have beautiful homes in their home states, funded by their oil jobs, but they choose to live in trailer homes so they could all be together.
While construction companies are said to more than willing to fill the demand, there is also a shortage of workers in the industry as seasoned construction workers are also choosing to work for oil companies because of the high income.
