Lead Poisoning Can Be Critical
Lead poisoning can lead to critical, lasting health problems among children and adults who are exposed to it. Low level exposure to lead can cause mental deficiencies, hearing impairment, and behavioral problems among children. EPA is spearheading the resolution of the lead contamination problems at the Puerto Rico Battery Recycling Facility in Arecibo. Working with EPA are the U.S. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, the Puerto Rico Department of Health, the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board, and the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Administration with a focus on the extensive lead contamination in the homes and cars of workers at the Battery Recycling Company.
