Denton Texas Approves Ban On Hydraulic Fracturing
On November 4, voters in Denton Texas approved the ban on hydraulic fracturing. This is clearly a blow to the oil and gas industry. Denton is atop the Barnett shale formation, the site where commercial fracking was first implemented.
Despite the contributions of the industry and to the state’s economy, it became clear that residents are more concerned about the possible environmental costs of fracking. There is still no hard evidence that fracking is really bad for the environment but environmental lobbyists are linking the methodology to groundwater contamination and earthquakes.
Of course just because there is no extensive report that covers this doesn’t mean the process does not have any negative impacts on the environment, but fracking has gone so far and wide (making the US a top oil producing nation in the last few years), it has outpaced studies on its impacts and that’s really where the problem lies. Now there is a debate on fracturing so divisive, people are voting on the future of the industry and their towns without sufficient data.
