Combustible Dust and the NFPA
Combustible dust occurrences may never be entirely eliminated from your workplace, although available equipment, procedures, and PPE can dramatically diminish its frequency and harmful consequences.
Combustible Dust Standards
Although OSHA has been stuck on the process of formulating rules about combustible dust, NFPA has been busy working on combustible dust standards. Likewise the development process of a new standard 652 Standard on Combustible Dust is underway and is slated to be published in 2015. The existing NFPA 654 Standard for the Prevention of Fire and Dust Explosions from the Manufacturing, Processing, and Handling of Combustible Particulate Solids 2013 Edition has been revised. They published a new comprehensive guide that covers, in depth the best practices and techniques for analyzing and mitigating combustible dust hazards. NFPA consistently moves forward with standards intended to identify, mitigate and protect workers from combustible dust hazards. The first line of defense is to mitigate the potential hazard, but there are workers that risk exposure and are consequently required to wear FR garments. Although you may never entirely eliminate combustible dust occurrences from your workplace, available equipment, procedures, and PPE can dramatically diminish its frequency and harmful consequences.
The NFPA has been busy working on combustible dust standards and you can read more about this at the following webpage.
