BC To Set The Cleanest LNG Facilities In The World
British Columbia’s Environment Minister Mary Polak introduced legislation On October 20, 2014 for the management of greenhouse gas emissions from the province’s burgeoning liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry.
Reports have it that the objective is to ensure that BC has the cleanest LNG facilities in the world with an intensity benchmark of 0.16 carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) tonnes per tonne of LNG produced.
This means for LNG facilities to comply there will be additional costs along with the LNG tax, carbon tax, royalty regime, corporate and other taxes.
Failure to comply could cost a companies a lot of money in fines but compliance will also enable a facility to achieve carbon credits which would result in performance credits that can be sold to other LNG facilities. So this can work both ways and in the long run it will be good for the Industry and the people who live here.
This will help BC reach its climate change goals along with the growth of the LNG industry and the number of liquefied natural gas plants presumed to start operation in British Columbia.
