The NFPA 2112 and NFPA 2113 For Flash Fire
There are two common safety standards that workers in the Oil & Gas Industry adhere to — NFPA 2112 and NFPA 2113.
The NFPA 2112 specifies the minimum performance requirements and test methods for flame resistant fabrics and components and is an essential standard for manufacturers and certifying agencies. The standard provides the minimum requirements for the design and construction.
FR garments must comply with the minimum performance requirements and test methods set out in the NFPA 2112 in order to enter the market.
Meanwhile, NFPA 2113 specifies the standard on the selection, care, use and maintenance of FR garments for the protection of industrial personnel against short-duration thermal exposures from fire. It is the go-to standard when it comes to building your FR clothing program.
The standard walks safety professionals through the hazard assessment, explaining how to specify clothing based on the NFPA 2112. It focuses on ensuring the safety of workers by minimizing health and safety risks by choosing the correct garment based on the proper selection criteria and how to properly wear the garments in the field. Even the proper care and maintenance of FR clothing is addressed in NFPA 2113.
Another important aspect to NFPA 2113 is that it stipulates the training guidelines to ensure that your program is in compliance with OSHA 1910.132. It is often the cited regulation when FR clothing programs fail to meet OSHA requirements.
