Insect Repellent And FR Clothing
Every year the concerns of how to properly use insect repellent while wearing FR clothing are brought forward. Therefore and for your reference following is some helpful information on this topic.
The problem is that the active ingredient DEET that is is utilized in the insect repellents is highly flammable. Yes the DEET is a hazard when it comes to flame resistant protective clothing for flash fire and electric arc hazards. What happens is with the addition of the insect repellent your protective FR clothing now has become a fuel source for the very hazard you are trying to protect against.
However repellents containing permethrin are safe to use on FR products and are even recommended for use by wildland fire fighters by the USDA and is non-flammable.
